I want individual therapy. What will the initial session be like?

You can choose to have a 50 or 80 minute session. Some people like the 80 minute option because they can tell more of their story and not feel rushed, while others like the 50 minute option because of financial considerations.

You will be invited to share your strengths, your challenges, your history and what you hope to achieve in therapy.

Couples Counselling

What will the initial session of couples counselling be like?

Your therapist will meet with you both for an 80 minute session. She has particular questions she will ask you about your relationship, including your strengths and challenges as a couple, your relationship history and what you hope to achieve in therapy.

How many sessions will it take?

This is difficult to answer, since every couple’s challenges and life experiences are unique to them. However, many couples report feeling calmer, more confident and better equipped to handle relationship challenges within as little as 6-10 sessions.

Can I bring my baby to the sessions?

Because of the focus the work requires, it is not advisable to bring your baby. Please arrange childcare.

Is there anything we can do to prepare for the first session?

There’s nothing you *have* to do, but it will be helpful to reflect on the questions mentioned and come prepared to share your thoughts.

Do we always meet as a couple or do we have individual sessions too?

Your therapist will meet with each person individually for one session. This will be either a 50 or 80 minute session, at their discretion. Other than that, they will meet with you as a couple. At times, they may suggest special individual sessions to address particular concerns, with the goal of bringing them back to the couples work.
